Australia to Ban YouTube for Under‑16s as Part of Landmark Teen Social Media Law
Australia will include YouTube in its world-first under‑16 social media ban, reversing a previous exemption for the platform. Effective December 10, 2025, children under 16 will be prohibited from holding YouTube accounts—though age‑appropriate viewing without login remains possible. The decision follows a finding that 37% of minors encountered harmful content on YouTube, prompting the government to require platforms to implement age verification or face fines up to A$49.5 million.
