Google Claims Gemini AI Uses Less Energy Than 9 Seconds of TV, Cuts Carbon Footprint by 44×

According to Google's new technical report, running a single Gemini AI text prompt consumes just 0.24 watt-hours—comparable to watching nine seconds of TV—and emits 0.03 g of CO₂, while using 0.26 mL of water (about five drops). Over the past year, Gemini’s energy use has dropped by 33×, and its carbon footprint by 44×, thanks to advancements in efficient model architecture, custom hardware, cleaner energy, and optimized infrastructure.
