Scientists Develop Perovskite Solar Cells That Let Indoor Devices Run Battery-Free

Researchers at University College London have engineered perovskite-based solar cells capable of harvesting indoor ambient light with 37.6% efficiency under normal office (1,000 lux) conditions, outpacing traditional silicon alternatives by six-fold. By using additives like rubidium chloride, DMOAI, and PEACl, they significantly reduced crystal defects — improving durability to retain 92% performance after 100 days. Applications include powering keyboards, alarms & IoT sensors without batteries.
