US-China Restart Talks in Madrid to Address Trade Frictions

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Rep. Jamieson Greer met Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Madrid to discuss ongoing trade irritants, the looming September 17 deadline for TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance to divest U.S. operations, and U.S. demands for tariffs on China over Russian oil purchases. Though a deal seems unlikely, analysts expect another extension of the TikTok deadline.
