Veteran Amazon Engineer Warns “Day 2” Culture Fueled by RTO, PIPs & Layoffs

A 12-year Amazon veteran retiring after joining in 2012 criticized the tech giant’s shift from its agile “Day 1” ethos to a “Day 2” culture marked by stringent return-to-office mandates, toxic competition, and fear-driven performance improvement plans (PIPs) and ranking systems. The post also lambasted frequent leadership changes under CEO Andy Jassy and noted recent cuts of about 100 roles in Amazon’s devices and services division.
